The mission of the Wharton Investment Management Fund is four-fold.

Enrich the overall educational experience at Wharton
The primary goal of the Wharton Investment Management Fund is to enhance the educational opportunities available to those Wharton MBA students with an interest in the investment management industry. The Fund achieves this goal by providing students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience researching and analyzing securities, to debate and better understand different investment philosophies, and to receive exposure to the organizational process involved in investment research and money management.

Outperform the Fund’s most relevant benchmark
Given its small-cap value investment discipline, the Fund seeks to outperform its most relevant benchmark: the Russell 2000 Value Index. It is the responsibility of the Fellows to manage the risk-reward prospects of the portfolio. As part of that process, the Fellows choose to manage the Fund on a sector neutral basis.

Provide recruiters with well-qualified candidates
The Wharton Investment Management Fund is a significant recruiting pool from which investment management firms select full-time employees at Wharton. Not only does the Fund benefit from a positive reputation as a training ground for students, but it also provides recruiters with specific evidence of students’ interest and ability levels in the investment management field. The professional success of recent Wharton MBA graduates who have gone into the investment management industry is a tribute to how well the Fund has met this objective.

Establish a valuable network for current students and alumni
The Fund recognizes and embraces the fact that, upon entry into Wharton, many MBA students have varying levels of experience in the investment management industry. As such, the Fund seeks to create an atmosphere in which every student feels comfortable participating and contributing, and where ideas are challenged but the people offering these ideas are not. Additionally, the existence of the Fund has established a continually growing network of alumni involved with the Wharton Investment Management Fund. As the number of investment professionals who support the Fund increases, it is the goal of the Fellows to strengthen ties between current students and Fund alumni.
