The 2008 Wharton Health Care Business Conference will be held on February 21st-22nd at the Park Hyatt Bellevue in downtown Philadelphia.
The Wharton Health Care Business Conference is in its 12th year as the leading health care forum for industry professionals, academics, and students. The annual two-day event takes place every February in Philadelphia, PA, and typically draws over 500 attendees from across the nation. Corporate sponsors fund the conference's operations.
This year's conference will address the convergence of the many sectors of health care – pharmaceuticals coupling with medical devices, consumers partnering with managed care companies, and IT accelerating progress and coordination. While each industry segment faces unique challenges, more and more these challenges overlap. Health care organizations are increasingly shifting strategies to stay ahead of the curve, private equity funds are broadening their scope of investment opportunities, pharmaceutical manufacturers are investing heavily in biotechnology, while traditionally research-focused biotechnology companies are extending into the realm of commercialization. All of this change is taking place in the midst of dynamic and innovative US reform initiatives, and an increasing focus on global health.

WHIVP is designed to give Wharton health care management students the opportunity to participate in service projects for health care systems with limited resources and severe health problems, such as HIV. WHIVP trips are student organized, student run, and student led. Projects give participants exposure to health care challenges in the developing world as well as the opportunity to work closely with organizations on the ground to develop viable strategies to improve their organizations. Projects typically take place during winter break (late December to early January) and summer break (during late May or end of August) but depend on the individual project details. Each year, small groups of students volunteer for two to three week consulting engagements worldwide. Previous projects have included: working in India to create HIV epidemiologic profile and improve HIV screening / data collection for the Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society; working with an HIV and family health clinic in Gaborone, Botswana to provide a financial and operational assessment of the clinic as well as developing a metrics and reporting structure for Aravind Eye Hospitals to manage future expansion of its operations from its current base in Tami Nadu, India.
During 2006, WHIVP expanded the number of projects it undertook to six projects, with five taking place in Sub-Saharan Africa and one in India. We have continued to grow our relationship with Aravind Eye Hospitals and have also introduced a new partnership with Doctors of the World through a microfinance project in Kenya. Our aim is that these and future partnerships will have the longevity to form the core of our projects each year, while also work on ad hoc projects where we believe we can add benefit. To this end, the WHIVP continues to look for dedicated participants who wish to apply their skills in helping the developing world's healthcare systems, and can help us expand our partnerships and geographic presence further still.
